1. I love this painting.

I love the title and what it means (to me, if not to the artist or to the general audience). I love all the symbolism: the bussled, corseted, woman pulling in the bat-man and devouring him with her kiss, her wings and animal nature pushed underneath the dress; the ring of little fires in the checked, escher-like floor; the sculpture that mirrors the figures that makes us wonder if we mirror the painting; the oh-so-civilized wallpaper; the hand breaking through (with) ; the key.

2. I found this painting by googling "hungry ghost."

When I was in grad school (for philosophy), my nose was always in the books and the books were always those of Kant, or Frege, or sometimes Mill or Rawls. The idea was to measure and understand the world. One time my friend Dave took me to the lake. He was a new grad student, from Mississippi, separated from his girlfriend, not fitting in with the grad school scene. We walked in silence around the lake during a cold early March, along golden-brown-now-gray reeds, and he told me about the hungry ghost. The hungry ghost, he said, roams the earth eating everything in sight, ravishing everything it finds, insatiable unsated unslaked hungry. The hungry ghost is never full. The hungry ghost cannot feel satisfied.
